THE WALL / INNOCENCE
(REMEMBER THOSE WHO WENT AHEAD)
1999

Remember those who went ahead,
Their names should be etched in red.

The black marble is so cold and bare,
I saw a young girl standing there.

I felt the pain that engulfed this girl,
Struck my heart with emotions aswirl,
Her cheeks and nose were cold and red,
A single name is what she said.

It was the name of father dear,
Her tiny figure amidst a stream of tears.

I felt the pain that engulfed this girl,
Struck my heart with emotions aswirl.

So remember those who went ahead,
But remember us too,
the little girl said.

Her mom came to her - paused - then whispered low,
My dear it's time - it's time to go,
To leave this place of honored dead,
To those who went ahead.

And as you grow and endure the pain,
Ask the question - Did daddy die in vain?

Remember those who went ahead,
Their names should be etched in red.

The black marble so cold and bare,
I saw a young girl standing there.

I found this poem several years when I lived in Michigan. It still brings a mist to my eyes and a heaviness to my heart.
